Ethereum Staking Reaches 43.8M ETH as Yields Compress

Protocol limits on exit throughput and pending changes to issuance and reward burns could determine how much of those smaller returns holders actually keep.

Overview

  • Bitwise’s Q4 2026 staking report, published Tuesday, October 20, 2026, shows a record 43.8 million ETH was staked by the end of Q3 2026, equal to 35.9% of the supply and marking a sixth straight quarter of net inflows.
  • Gross staking yield on Ethereum fell to 2.63% in Q3 from 2.81% in Q2 because more ETH is sharing the same issuance and daily fee/MEV income dropped after capacity upgrades.
  • Operator consolidation after the Pectra change (EIP-7251) cut recorded active validator entries from about 1.1 million to roughly 881,000 as operators merged validators while keeping the same ETH staked.
  • Liquidity remains constrained by the protocol exit cap of 57,600 ETH per day, which produced multi‑day queues of roughly 25 days at quarter end, and a proposed EIP-8061 would boost throughput to an estimated ~247,000 ETH per day.
  • After issuance-driven dilution and before commission, Bitwise-based estimates put a staker’s net annual gain at about 1.7%, and growing institutional staking or adoption of proposals such as EIP-8363 or Solana’s faster disinflation could further reshape returns and validator economics.
