Ethereum Postpones Glamsterdam Hoodi Testnet Upgrade

Developers paused the Hoodi activation to probe gas-accounting changes that could change how deployed smart contracts handle failed calls.

Overview

  • Core developers agreed on Oct. 22 to remove the Oct. 26 Hoodi activation for Glamsterdam so teams can investigate compatibility and security concerns.
  • A ChainSecurity analysis published Oct. 13 showed EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 can alter gas flows during sub-calls which may let some contracts record failed operations permanently and identified about 13 real-world examples under responsible disclosure.
  • The Hoodi removal cancels Amsterdam (execution) and Gloas (consensus) activations and the planned jump to a 200 million block gas limit while leaving Hoodi’s existing chain history intact.
  • Node and validator operators must update or revert client builds to omit the canceled fork and client teams must publish confirmed releases before any rescheduled test runs.
  • No replacement Hoodi or mainnet date has been set, EIP-8037 remains in Last Call review through Nov. 1, and developers are continuing contract reviews and specification work before restarting the staged rollout.
