Ethereum Postpones Glamsterdam Hoodi Testnet Activation

Developers paused the Hoodi run to probe EIP-8037 and related gas-accounting changes after security researchers reported compatibility risks for existing smart contracts.

Overview

  • Core developers removed the October 26 Hoodi activation during an All Core Devs Execution call on Thursday and told operators not to run fork-enabled builds for that epoch.
  • Security firm ChainSecurity reported that EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 change how gas for creating and accessing state is charged and identified 13 real-world examples where those changes can make failed calls behave differently.
  • The specific risk ChainSecurity highlighted is 'insufficient-gas griefing,' where returned or refilled state gas can let a failure handler complete and record a permanent failure that previously would have reverted.
  • The Hoodi pause also cancels the planned jump to a roughly 200 million block gas limit for that epoch, and the Ethereum Foundation said no replacement Hoodi epoch or Glamsterdam mainnet date has been set.
  • Node, validator and application teams must update or revert client releases to remove the canceled activation, audit contracts and update gas-estimation tools while core devs complete compatibility and specification work.
