Ethereum Pauses Glamsterdam Testnet After Eight Contract Risks Found

The Foundation has published a public audit repository to collect reports that will decide whether affected projects must be patched or the gas‑repricing EIPs adjusted.

Overview

  • Developers put the Hoodi testnet activation on hold after auditor ChainSecurity flagged eight smart‑contract invariants that EIP‑8037 and EIP‑8038 could break.
  • ChainSecurity’s Oct. 13 report shows the two EIPs change how gas is charged for creating and accessing state, which can let operations finish that previously would have failed and thus change contract outcomes.
  • The Ethereum Foundation published a GitHub repo documenting the eight invariants and asked developers and auditors to submit findings privately to glamsterdam@ethereum.org with fixes and tests.
  • The Hoodi fork, which had been scheduled for Oct. 26 and would have raised the testnet gas limit, has no new date while core developers assess whether contracts can be patched or the specifications must change; a separate validator‑deposit routing fix was merged Oct. 26 and regression tests were added.
  • Most contracts appear unaffected in historical replays but projects that assume fixed gas budgets or specific failure behavior may need higher gas limits or code changes and infrastructure providers such as wallets and relayers must audit for hardcoded gas assumptions.
