Ethereum Economic Zone Executes First Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction

The experimental mainnet test shows linked calls on Ethereum and a rollup can succeed or revert together, offering a route to unified liquidity that still needs audits and broader rollup adoption.

Overview

  • EEZ carried out the first verified atomic L1-to-L2 transaction that coordinated state changes on Ethereum mainnet and a rollup and moved 0.001 ETH in a proof-of-concept run on Oct. 5–6, 2026.
  • The test demonstrated “atomic synchronous composability,” meaning an L1 call and a linked L2 update either both complete or both revert so users avoid partial execution or stranded funds.
  • Under the hood the system packages operations with a proxy-and-bundle method and submits them via an L1 function called postAndVerifyBatch so L1 block ordering finalizes the joint execution.
  • The implementation is explicitly experimental and unaudited, the transfer was tiny, and Gnosis Chain is slated to be an early adopter with a planned genesis in December 2026–January 2027 that will use a centralized composer and extra trust assumptions at launch.
  • If audits succeed and other rollups join, EEZ could cut the need for bridges and unify liquidity across layers, which would simplify user flows and reduce delay and loss risk; wide production use depends on rollup commitments and real-time ZK proving work through 2027.
