ETC Outage Disrupts Tokyo Tollgate on Tomei, Restored in Under Two Hours

NEXCO reports a local power-supply failure is under review.

Overview

  • NEXCO Central said the ETC malfunction began around 1:00 p.m. and service was restored at about 2:50 p.m. on October 21.
  • Seven of ten ETC lanes at the Tokyo tollgate became unusable after power to ETC equipment stopped, according to the company.
  • Operators raised lane barriers and temporarily opened entry and exit points to maintain traffic flow during the disruption.
  • Vehicles that passed through the tollgate during the outage will not be billed for tolls.
  • The incident follows a much larger ETC failure in April that spanned eight prefectures and took roughly 38 hours to fully restore.
