Estonia Reports Three Russian MiG-31s Breached Its Airspace, Intercepted by NATO

Tallinn has requested NATO Article 4 consultations over what it calls a serious airspace violation.

Overview

  • Estonia said three MiG-31s entered near the island of Vaindloo for about 12 minutes with transponders off, no flight plan, and no radio contact before Italian F-35s intercepted under the Baltic Air Policing mission.
  • The Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires and issued a formal protest as the government moves to seek consultations under NATO’s Article 4.
  • NATO confirmed an immediate response and interception, with spokesperson Allison Hart calling the overflight another example of Russian recklessness.
  • EU leaders condemned the incursion; Kaja Kallas labeled it an extremely dangerous provocation, and Ursula von der Leyen urged swift approval of a 19th sanctions package that includes curbs on Russian LNG.
  • The incident comes after recent Russian drone crossings into Poland and Romania and a Polish report of two Russian fighters near a Petrobaltic platform, as Western intelligence remains split on whether the Polish drone episode was deliberate.
