Esteban Puts PNV at the Center and Sets Terms for a New Basque Statute

He set strict conditions for any revised estatus, demanding concrete national recognition, arbitration and external representation.

Overview

  • In his first Alderdi Eguna as party chief, Aitor Esteban declared the PNV the “center of gravity” of Euskadi and contrasted its moderation with what he called EH Bildu’s destructive radicalism.
  • He left the door open to a pact on a new framework of self-government but warned the PNV will not join talks that deliver only symbolic changes.
  • Esteban announced a General Assembly for December 13 in Vitoria to update party statutes as part of an internal renewal drive.
  • The event used a new round, centrally placed stage in Foronda to underscore the party’s centrist identity and proximity to voters.
  • Esteban criticized PP secretary general Miguel Tellado and rejected a joint electoral list with Bildu, as Lehendakari Imanol Pradales urged defending Basque institutions in an increasingly polarized climate.
