Essen Moves Kupferdreh Rosenmontag Parade to Tulpensonntag With Shorter, Reversed Route

Organisers say tighter safety requirements now make a single, fully staffed procession the safest option.

Overview

  • The Kupferdreh procession will run on Sunday, 15 February 2026, starting at 13:11 local time.
  • Organisers and the city adopted a new security concept and concluded the Kupferdreh and Rüttenscheid parades can no longer run in parallel on Rosenmontag due to personnel and logistical limits.
  • The route has been condensed and will run in the opposite direction because of current construction, beginning at Kupferdreher Straße/Deilbachbrücke and ending at Kupferdreher Straße/Poststraße.
  • Parking along the route is prohibited from 08:00, and Kupferdreher Straße will be closed to traffic from 11:00 on the day of the event.
  • Officials note nationwide carnival security has tightened following past incidents, though organisers stress the date change is not a direct reaction to last year’s bomb-threat cancellation.
