Escondido Police Identify 54-Year-Old Shot After Knife Confrontation in Traffic

A county protocol assigned San Diego homicide detectives to an outside investigation now in progress.

Overview

  • Police named the wounded man as Juan Ramos, 54, who was taken to Palomar Medical Center and is expected to survive.
  • Multiple 911 callers reported a man running in traffic and lunging at vehicles around 12:10 p.m. near South Centre City Parkway and West Felicita Avenue.
  • Two uniformed officers and a plainclothes detective ordered Ramos to drop a knife before he advanced toward the detective, prompting all three to fire; he got up, moved toward officers again, and was shot a second time.
  • Arriving officers used less‑lethal sponge rounds, disarmed Ramos, and provided aid until paramedics transported him; the uniformed officers’ body cameras were activated.
  • San Diego Police homicide detectives are leading the criminal probe under a county agreement, the District Attorney will review it, Escondido police opened an administrative review, and federal authorities are monitoring.
