Escaped Inmate from Georgia Jail Captured; Three Others Still at Large

Chavis Demaryo Stokes, one of four inmates who escaped from the Bibb County Detention Center, was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force; the remaining three escapees, charged with offenses ranging from murder to drug trafficking, remain at large with a total reward of $73,000 offered for information leading to their capture.

  • The escaped inmate, Chavis Demaryo Stokes, 29, was captured at a home in Montezuma, about 50 miles from the Bibb County Detention Center where he had been held for drug trafficking and firearm possession.
  • The remaining three escapees, Joe Fournier, Marc Kerry Anderson, and Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, are still at large. They were being held for charges ranging from murder to aggravated assault to drug trafficking.
  • Stokes and the other three men escaped the detention center on October 16 by climbing through a damaged window and a cut perimeter fence.
  • A Dodge Challenger car, spotted in the surveillance footage near the jail, is believed to be related to the escape. A man was arrested and charged with auto theft and aiding the escape, believed to have stolen the vehicle from a rental agency.
  • Law enforcement officials have announced a total reward of $73,000 for information leading to the capture of the remaining inmates, with $10,000 offered by the FBI specifically for tips leading to Barnwell's apprehension.
  • During the time of the escape, fewer than 10 staff members were present at the Bibb County Detention Center, which houses over 800 inmates. The sheriff's department has reportedly begun making staffing changes in response to the escape.
