ESA’s Themis Reusable Stage Stands Fully Assembled on Swedish Launch Pad

The Prometheus-powered T1H now enters cryogenic pad testing ahead of low-altitude hop flights under the EU-funded Salto program.

Overview

  • Themis T1H is upright on its pad at Esrange in Kiruna with its four landing legs installed for the first time, completing full assembly.
  • ArianeGroup says the milestone begins “combined tests” to verify mechanical, electrical and fluid interfaces with the pad, targeting a test under cryogenic conditions.
  • The 30‑meter‑tall, 3.5‑meter‑wide stage uses the restartable, throttleable Prometheus engine, designed to enable controlled vertical takeoff and landing.
  • After final checks, the stage was moved to the pad in August and hoisted to facilitate rapid leg installation, and it is now preparing for a wet dress rehearsal before initial flights.
  • Developed under ESA’s Future Space Transportation program with ArianeGroup as prime contractor, the first flight campaign will run within Horizon Europe’s Salto project involving 25 partners across 12 EU countries.
