Esa-Pekka Salonen Named LA Phil Creative Director With Parallel Paris Roles

The five-year posts formalize a cross-Atlantic partnership that shifts his role toward curation, mentorship, new commissions, not daily administration.

Overview

  • The Los Angeles Philharmonic appointed Salonen creative director starting in the 2026–27 season under a five-year term.
  • Paris named him Creativity and Innovation Chair at the Philharmonie de Paris and principal conductor of the Orchestre de Paris, also on a five-year timeline.
  • He will lead four weeks of LA Phil programs next season, then a minimum of six weeks in subsequent seasons, with eight weeks scheduled in Paris.
  • The LAParis partnership will include a Salonen International Conducting Fellowship, joint festivals, tours, ballet commissions pairing choreographers and composers such as Benjamin Millepied and Gabriella Smith, and immersive media projects.
  • The LA role is backed by a multimillion-dollar endowment from Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen, while the LA Phil continues its separate search to succeed Gustavo Dudamel.
