Erlangen and Gröbenzell Approve First Late-Night Shopping Pilots Under New Bavarian Law

The measures test extended weekday opening to 23:00 to boost downtown trade.

Overview

  • Erlangen will hold its first extended opening on Friday, 28 November 2025, allowing participating city-center shops to stay open until 23:00.
  • The Erlangen ordinance, passed on 30 October, designates three annual dates for late openings and runs initially through the end of 2026.
  • Gröbenzell’s council voted 24–5 to permit a pilot long shopping night on Saturday, 29 November 2025, with shops able to operate until 23:00.
  • Proponents in Gröbenzell frame the one-night pilot as municipality-wide to maximize participation and to align with a same-day Christkindlmarkt.
  • Both moves rely on Bavaria’s updated Ladenschlussgesetz effective 1 August 2025, which lets municipalities allow late weekday openings on up to eight days between 20:00 and 24:00, though some local officials warn of added burdens for employees.
