Ericsson Cuts About 100 Canadian Jobs, Shifts Work to Global Hubs

The company is folding Canadian network management into centralized hubs to cut costs.

Overview

  • Canada-based technical staff were informed Monday they will receive severance and transition support, with Oct. 31 set as their final day.
  • Ericsson said the move brings the Canadian network management services team under its global operations and will distribute work across centralized hubs.
  • The company did not specify how many roles will move outside Canada or identify destination countries.
  • Many affected workers previously supported Rogers cellular towers, after roughly 400 technicians and managers were offered severance or transfers to Ericsson in April.
  • Unionization efforts are active, with United Steelworkers Local 1944 seeking certification for 200 transferred employees and a new filing covering 37 of those laid off; Ericsson’s Q2 report flagged continued high restructuring charges as operating profit excluding those charges reached 7.0 billion Swedish crowns.
