Overview
- On May 30, 2025, a Boston federal grand jury charged Spofford with conspiracy to commit stalking and two counts of interstate stalking in connection with the harassment campaign.
- Prosecutors allege Spofford paid his associate, Eric Labarge, $20,000 in cash and provided victim addresses and detailed instructions for carrying out the scheme.
- Labarge and three others—Tucker Cockerline, Keenan Saniatan and Michael Waselchuck—were convicted in 2024 for vandalizing NHPR journalists’ homes and sentenced to 21–46 months in prison.
- Each count in the indictment carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
- The alleged retaliation followed NHPR’s March 2022 exposé on sexual misconduct and abusive leadership at Granite Recovery Centers and inspired the Pulitzer Prize–finalist podcast “The 13th Step.”
