Equity Inflows Surge, Debt Withdrawals Drive Mutual Fund Net Outflow

The split shows strong retail SIP-led demand for equities can be offset by large quarter-end corporate redemptions from short-term debt funds.

Overview

  • AMFI data for September 2026 shows equity-oriented schemes drew about Rs 38,306 crore, a roughly 31% month-on-month rise that marked the highest inflow in five months.
  • Monthly systematic investment plan contributions reached a record Rs 32,490 crore in September, signalling steady retail participation through regular investments.
  • Small-cap funds recorded a monthly high of about Rs 9,038 crore and mid-cap schemes took in roughly Rs 7,835–7,845 crore, together making up about 44% of total equity inflows.
  • Debt-oriented mutual funds suffered very large net withdrawals of about Rs 1.83 lakh crore in September, led by liquid fund redemptions of roughly Rs 95,743 crore and money market outflows near Rs 50,846 crore, which produced an industry-wide net outflow of about Rs 1.33 lakh crore.
  • The flows reflect differing investor horizons: retail investors are adding to equity exposures through SIPs while corporates and institutions pulled cash from short-term debt vehicles at quarter-end, a timing-driven move that could be temporary but has constrained industry totals and may affect liquidity in the near term.
