Equipment Failure Killed Plainville Volunteer Firefighter Raymond Moreau, State Police Say

Authorities expect a lengthy investigation into the circumstances that led to Moreau’s death

  • The Connecticut State Police identified 60-year-old Raymond “Ray” Moreau, a 35-year department veteran and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, as the fallen firefighter.
  • Moreau was struck by a dislodged piece of fire apparatus while battling a blaze at 45 Marie Road and later died during surgery at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain.
  • Fire crews from Plainville, Bristol and Farmington provided mutual aid to extinguish the early-morning house fire, which destroyed the home but left all occupants uninjured.
  • Governor Ned Lamont ordered U.S. and state flags to be lowered to half-staff in Moreau’s honor until the date of his interment.
  • A comprehensive, multi-agency probe has been launched involving State Police Major Crimes, fire explosion and collision reconstruction units, OSHA and the state attorney’s office.
