Epic Games Store Reinstates Blockchain Games

Policy change allows Adults Only-rated games due to blockchain or NFT technology, marking a significant shift in the gaming industry.

  • Epic Games Store has updated its rules to allow blockchain games, which are typically rated Adults Only by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), to be sold on its platform.
  • The change came after NFT card game Gods Unchained and play-to-earn multiplayer football game Strike Manager 3 were removed from the Epic Games Store due to their Adults Only rating, but have now been returned to the store.
  • Blockchain games must still comply with Epic Games Store’s own technology Guidelines and can’t include things such as 'pornography, gambling, and hateful content.'
  • This policy change is a significant shift in the gaming industry’s approach to blockchain technology, as major gaming platforms like Xbox and PlayStation generally do not distribute AO-rated games.
  • Immutable, the publisher of Gods Unchained, welcomed the policy change, stating that it shows recognition of the experience of web3 gaming and brings it one step closer to adoption.
