Overview

  • From August 1, all new and inactive Universal Account Numbers must be generated and activated solely through the UMANG app with Aadhaar face authentication, replacing most employer-driven steps
  • Members need a valid Aadhaar number, access to the linked mobile for OTP verification, and both the UMANG and Aadhaar Face RD apps to complete the process
  • Three core services—UAN allotment/activation, activation of existing UANs and biometric re-authentication for active UANs—now rely exclusively on face-authentication technology
  • International workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan remain exempt and can continue using the previous employer-based UAN generation process
  • Users report common setup issues such as OTP failures and face-scan errors, prompting media outlets to publish step-by-step guides and user advisories
