EPCOT Installs Railing-Mounted Tables in World Showcase

The bolt-on standing shelves are meant to give festival visitors a place to set food after new curved-top solar trash compactors removed common makeshift surfaces.

Overview

  • The new railing tables were first spotted Aug. 20–21 and observers counted multiple units near the Mexico and Germany pavilions and along the walkway by the Odyssey building.
  • Each unit is a flat, wood-grain composite shelf bolted to iron railings with angled black metal brackets and a visible 'no sitting' sign to indicate standing use.
  • Park reporters say the rollout appears to respond to a recurring Food & Wine Festival problem—limited table space—and to the June installation of curved-top solar trash compactors that eliminated improvised trash-can tables.
  • Only a small number have been installed so far, and further placement will depend on railing height, shape and slope so the current sightings are best read as a limited test.
  • Guests who long used trash-can tops for trays now have a purpose-built option and the change could reduce crowding for standing groups during the festival; similar railing tables have been used before at Disney California Adventure.
