The latest cuts at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will reduce its workforce by nearly a quarter

Overview

  • The reduction in force cuts EPA staffing from 16,155 to 12,448, eliminating more than 3,700 positions.
  • The agency will dissolve its Office of Research and Development and shift laboratory activities into program offices.
  • A dedicated Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions will centralize research within the administrator’s office.
  • A new Office of Finance and Administration will merge financial management and mission support to streamline contracts, grants and facilities.
  • Officials said the overhaul follows a Supreme Court decision clearing the way for mass federal layoffs and will save about $750 million each year.
