• The monument stands beside the Church of San Juan Bautista in Ponce’s hometown of Chiva.
• The attack was premeditated, following earlier pro-bullfighting decorations installed by Peña Taurina El Torico de Chiva.
• The sculpture suffered a similar vandalism years ago and the previous perpetrators were identified.
• Local police have opened an investigation and cleaning crews are working to restore the statue before Friday’s homage event.
