Enrique Molina Pico, Former Argentine Navy Chief, Dies at 87

The career officer moved from commanding in the Malvinas conflict to organizing Argentina’s Gulf War naval deployments, then leading the ITBA as a civilian academic.

  • Molina Pico died early Saturday at his home in San Isidro at age 87, according to reports from Argentine outlets.
  • He commanded the missile destroyer ARA Hércules during the 1982 Malvinas/Falklands war and was later decorated by Congress for his service.
  • As naval attaché in Washington in 1990, he helped plan and coordinate Argentina’s Gulf War missions Alfil 1 and Alfil 2, work that earned him the U.S. Legion of Merit (Officer).
  • He served as Chief of the General Staff of the Navy from July 1993 to July 1996, a period that included Argentine participation in UN peacekeeping in Haiti and Cyprus, before stepping down over budget cuts.
  • After retiring from the Navy, he was rector of the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires from 1999 to 2012 and later joined national academies; his remains will be taken Sunday to Parque Memorial cemetery in Pilar.
