Overview
- The new Simpler Recycling rules took effect at the end of June 2026 and stop six kitchen items from being placed in standard household recycling collections: drinking glasses, glass cookware such as Pyrex, ceramic crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, and coffee pods.
- Rules were introduced under the Environment Act 2021 to require separate collections for food waste, paper and card, glass, metal and plastic in order to improve recycling quality and reduce landfill.
- Items are banned because materials like tempered glass and ceramics melt at different temperatures or are too small to sort reliably, which damages recycling streams and raises contamination rates.
- Some local authorities are legally exempt from the new requirements until at least 2040, so accepted items and enforcement will vary and residents should check their council’s guidance before disposal.
- Householders risking refused collections are advised to use alternatives such as charity donation, scrap-metal centres, household recycling centre pod bins for coffee capsules, or secure general-waste disposal when no specialist route exists.
