Engineers Attribute Calgary Water Main Break to 1970s Manufacturing Lapses

Mayor Jyoti Gondek will unveil next week how the city plans to upgrade its water system over the coming years

The Bearspaw South Feeder Main, the largest in Calgary’s water system, experienced a major break on June 5, 2024.

Overview

  • An Alberta engineers’ report identifies relaxed manufacturing standards and material degradation from the 1970s as the key factors in the June 2024 Bearspaw Feeder Main rupture.
  • The failed feeder main, built to last a century, provided about 60 percent of Calgary’s treated water before its premature collapse.
  • Clean water gushed into city streets when the pipe burst, leading to strict water‐use restrictions that lasted until late September 2024.
  • The report finds no evidence of municipal malpractice, confirming the City of Calgary met all relevant engineering regulations.
  • Mayor Gondek has said increased investment in maintenance is essential and will detail planned system improvements in her upcoming announcement next week.
