Engineer Beaten by Youths After Aiding Fallen Scooter Rider in Naples

Investigators are reviewing McDonald’s surveillance video to identify the attackers.

  • Raffaele Di Giacomo, a 47-year-old Milan-based engineer visiting family, was assaulted late on 26 August in Fuorigrotta after stopping to help a scooter rider who had fallen.
  • The group that attacked him grew from about six to at least a dozen youths who punched, kicked and struck him with helmets, according to his account.
  • He was taken to Ospedale Cardarelli with serious facial and head injuries, including a displaced nasal fracture and a fractured zygoma.
  • The assault occurred near the McDonald’s on via Giambattista Marino and was witnessed by customers, while his mother and his children, ages 10 and 14, remained in the car.
  • His brother, municipal councillor Sergio Lomasto, reported finding police and an ambulance at the scene and renewed calls for tighter controls in the area.
