Engardio Faces Recall Threat From the Voters Who Elected Him, Precinct Analysis Shows

Backlash to the Great Highway park plan has concentrated in the same areas that lifted him in 2022.

Overview

  • Past results show the precincts most supportive of Engardio in 2022 were also the most opposed to 2024’s Proposition K that made the Upper Great Highway parkland.
  • Nearly 64% of District 4 voters rejected the closure even as it passed citywide with about 55% of the vote, and all but one in-district precinct voted no.
  • Several southern-edge precincts newly added in redistricting, identified as among the city’s least progressive, strongly backed Engardio and later led opposition to Prop K.
  • Fundraising tilts heavily toward Engardio’s side, with $814,000 raised versus $243,000 for the recall as of Sept. 8, including larger checks from tech donors and the police union.
  • Nancy Pelosi recently endorsed Engardio, while the city’s Democratic committee took no position and Mayor Daniel Lurie has not weighed in.
