Overview
- The Conservative-led minority administration has put a formal policy in place restricting permanent flags at Enfield Civic Centre to the Union Flag, the Flag of St George and the borough’s Enfield Beast.
- Council leader Alessandro Georgiou said the rule aims to provide “clarity and consistency” and that the three flags are intended to represent the borough and nation equally.
- The administration made a time-limited exception to fly the Armed Forces Day flag this month to mark that commemoration.
- Enfield Labour called the decision “a slap in the face to the LGBT community,” and opponents note Georgiou had earlier told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he would not be opposed to flying a Pride flag.
- The council says it will still host Chroma: A Festival of Pride at Dugdale Arts Centre on 18 July, a move supporters see as celebration of LGBTQI+ culture while critics argue it does not replace public flag visibility.
