Overview
- Barmer’s Arztreport shows recorded endometriosis cases in Bavaria rose from about 39,800 in 2005 to roughly 82,900 in 2024, equal to 1,248 treated per 100,000 women.
- The report finds the average age at first recorded diagnosis has fallen to 37.4 years, about four years younger than two decades ago.
- There are large regional differences in Germany, with Berlin at about 1,618 treated per 100,000 and Thuringia at about 939, and diagnoses are more common in densely populated areas than in rural regions.
- Barmer and experts warn of a high undiagnosed population because symptoms are often mistaken for heavy menstrual pain, and the report also shows higher rates of migraine, musculoskeletal pain, depression and anxiety among diagnosed women.
- The findings come from anonymized Barmer billing records covering roughly 10% of the population for 2005–2024 that were standardized and extrapolated, prompting calls for stronger public awareness and better care access.
