Endeavour Mining, the largest gold producer in West Africa, discovered the payment during a review of acquisitions and disposals.
De Montessus has denied any misconduct but admitted to a 'lapse in judgement' regarding the payment.
Endeavour Mining is also investigating allegations made against de Montessus relating to his personal conduct with colleagues.
The company's shares fell 12% following the announcement of de Montessus's dismissal.
