ENAV System Fault Triggers Major Disruption at Bergamo Airport

Fog-limited visibility magnified the outage, leaving Epiphany weekend travelers facing cancellations and diversions.

Overview

  • Sacbo reported that an ENAV instrument-approach failure began shortly before 18:00 on Saturday as low visibility constrained operations.
  • From Saturday evening to this morning, 34 arrivals were diverted, 21 arrivals were canceled, and 8 were delayed and reprogrammed, while 26 departures were canceled, 6 operated from other airports, and 7 were rescheduled.
  • The airport remained congested this morning with thousands of travelers affected and no full restoration time announced, though operators expected partial recovery by early afternoon.
  • Ground staff contended with long overnight queues as passengers slept in corridors or sought hotels, taxis, buses, or alternative transport at added expense.
  • Schedules spilled into today, including a Bergamo–Manchester departure moved from 23:00 to 19:00 and an arrival shifted from 01:15 to 19:40.
