Employers Launch National Coalition for Workplace Savings

The group will promote payroll-default, easy-access cash accounts to help workers build emergency savings and avoid high-cost borrowing.

Overview

  • The National Coalition for Workplace Savings formally launched this week with founding members including the Co-op, Next, First Bus, Defra, Travelodge, Mitie and StepChange and a collective workforce of about 400,000.
  • Claire Costello of the Co-op will chair the coalition and the launch has been publicly backed by Economic Secretary Rachel Blake as part of the government’s financial inclusion strategy.
  • The schemes use payroll-default contributions into easy-access cash accounts that employees can withdraw without penalty, applying behavioural lessons from pension auto-enrolment to make saving habitual.
  • Employers are being urged to join via the coalition website or through partners such as the Money and Pensions Service, Nest Insight and Tisa as the group moves into recruitment and sharing best practice.
  • The initiative aims to boost workers’ short-term financial resilience and cut reliance on expensive debt, but its impact will depend on voluntary employer take-up and the design of individual schemes over the coming years.
