Employer Says N.H. Mother Was Suspected of Stealing About $600,000 Before Murder-Suicide

Police had referred an embezzlement complaint to investigators a week before the deaths.

Overview

  • Autopsy findings determined Emily D. Long shot her husband and two of their children before killing herself, and a three-year-old survived without injury.
  • Wing-Itz owner Derek Fisher said Long, the chain’s operations manager, was suspected of diverting roughly $600,000 to $660,000 over several years.
  • Fisher and a bookkeeper flagged discrepancies on June 18, a bank told him on Aug. 8 that statements he received were manipulated, and a police report was filed Aug. 11.
  • Hampton police said the complaint was sent to the criminal investigations division and no arrest was made before the Aug. 18 killings.
  • Fisher said he will not pursue recovery from Long’s estate so any remaining assets can benefit the surviving child, and authorities cautioned against assuming a single motive as inquiries continue.
