Employer Denies Bullying as Coahuila Homicide Unit Probes 'Papayita' Death

Prosecutors say they have not found evidence that a corrosive was poured into his drink.

Overview

  • Carlos Gurrola, a 47-year-old cleaning worker known as “Papayita,” died on September 18 after ingesting a beverage his family says was tainted with degreaser and after alleging repeated workplace harassment.
  • The Coahuila Fiscalía said in a September 19 bulletin that the case was turned over to the homicide unit and that, so far, no indication has been found of a deliberately added corrosive substance.
  • Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the day of the incident and the day prior and have taken statements from eyewitnesses, with the inquiry remaining open.
  • Multiservicios Rocasa, the subcontractor that employed Gurrola, publicly denied any bullying, said it is cooperating with authorities, and noted he was taken through several IMSS clinics for treatment.
  • Friends and neighbors marched on Sunday to demand justice and the release of security footage, while one media report cited the detention of a person identified as Carlos de Jesús “N,” a development not detailed by officials.
