Employee Health Insurance Cards Expire Dec. 1 as Japan Shifts to MyNa System

To head off disruption, the health ministry will accept expired cards with normal co-payments through March 31.

Overview

  • From Dec. 2, patients are expected to present a MyNa insurance card or a paper qualification-confirmation letter at clinics and hospitals.
  • Roughly 77 million people on company and public-employee plans are affected, spanning health insurance societies, the Japan Health Insurance Association, and mutual aid associations.
  • The ministry says facilities should rely on prior records if electronic identity checks fail so patients are not charged full costs.
  • MyNa usage remains limited, with reported utilization around 37.14% at the end of October.
  • Similar transitional measures have been in place since July for National Health Insurance enrollees and people aged 75 and over, whose older cards have already lapsed.
