Emirates Bans In-Flight Use of Power Banks Starting Oct. 1

The carrier cites a safety review plus rising lithium-battery incidents as the reason for tighter rules that keep devices within crew reach.

Overview

  • From October 1, passengers may carry only one power bank under 100 watt-hours and it must remain switched off for the entire flight.
  • Power banks cannot be used to charge devices or be recharged onboard, and they must be stored in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat.
  • Placement in overhead bins is not allowed, and power banks remain prohibited in checked baggage under existing rules.
  • All units must display capacity ratings, with Emirates highlighting thermal runaway risks from damaged or overcharged batteries.
  • The policy aligns with moves by major airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and China Airlines; Emirates offers in-seat power and advises travelers to pre-charge devices.
