Emirates Bans In-Flight Use of Power Banks Effective October 1

The carrier cites a safety review following rising lithium-battery incidents across aviation.

Overview

  • Passengers may carry only one power bank under 100 watt-hours and it must remain switched off for the entire flight.
  • Power banks must be stored within reach in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat and are prohibited in overhead bins and checked luggage.
  • Using a power bank to charge devices or recharging the power bank via in-seat power is no longer allowed on any Emirates flight.
  • Emirates says the policy aims to reduce thermal runaway hazards tied to lithium-ion batteries, aligning with 2025 restrictions adopted by airlines including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Korean Air, China Airlines and Thai Airways.
  • Emirates provides in-seat charging and advises travelers to fully charge devices before flying and to carry clearly labeled, undamaged power banks.
