Emilio de Ípola, Argentine Philosopher and Sociologist, Dies at 86

A leading UBA–CONICET scholar whose studies of rumor and populism shaped Argentine social thought.

  • He died on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at age 86, with no cause of death reported.
  • Kidnapped by a military command on April 7, 1976, he was tortured and imprisoned in Devoto, Caseros and La Plata, where he drafted La bemba on clandestine prison rumor.
  • After his release he went into exile in Mexico, joined the exile journal Controversia and published work on populism.
  • He served as Professor Emeritus at the University of Buenos Aires and a senior CONICET researcher, authoring influential books including Ideología y discurso populista and Althusser, el infinito adiós.
  • He engaged in Argentina’s democratic transition through Grupo Esmeralda, co‑wrote Raúl Alfonsín’s Parque Norte speech and helped found the Club de Cultura Socialista; his wake is Tuesday 18:00–22:00 at Malabia 1662 with burial Wednesday at Parque Memorial de Pilar.
