Elphinstone Bridge Demolition Triggers Gridlock Across DadarParel Corridor

Rail planners say night blocks with 800-ton cranes will keep trains running during the work.

Overview

  • Crews began taking down the century-old Prabhadevi (Elphinstone) road-over-bridge on the night of September 12, with a 60-day demolition window announced.
  • Traffic police diversions have pushed vehicles onto Currey Road, Tilak and Chinchpokli bridges, turning 15–20 minute trips into hour-long journeys or more across Dadar, Parel and Lalbaug.
  • BEST and MSRTC have curtailed or rerouted 11 services, with several lines shifted from Currey Road to Chinchpokli and others terminating earlier than before.
  • Commuters and hospital visitors report delayed ambulances and difficult access to major Parel facilities including Tata Memorial, KEM and Wadia Children’s.
  • MahaRail has requested 82 railway traffic blocks, officials plan heavy-lift dismantling with two 800‑ton cranes, and reconstruction is slated to take about a year as part of the SewriWorli connector.
