Overview

  • The 1996 oil-on-panel work is estimated at £1.5 million to £2 million and will be offered at Sotheby’s London contemporary art sale on June 25, 2025.
  • Elizabeth Peyton created the piece from a 1995 Stefan De Batselier photograph, with Sotheby’s specialist Antonia Gardner calling its depiction of “quiet tension” remarkably prescient.
  • One of four Peyton portraits of the Gallagher brothers resides in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and another depicting Liam alone fetched $4.1 million at auction last November.
  • Some Oasis fans have taken to social media to question the painting’s likeness, comparing the brothers’ features to other pop figures and mocking its aesthetic.
  • Oasis will launch their reunion tour at Cardiff Stadium on July 4, marking their first performances since splitting in 2009, and Liam Gallagher has expressed regret over the years lost to their feud.
