Elias Morgan Jailed for Life With 45-Year Minimum for Murder of Ex-Prison Officer

Police will review the case for potential further charges following a conviction built on CCTV, phone records and vehicle data.

Overview

  • Mr Justice Goose sentenced Morgan at Preston Crown Court on 2 September, calling the shooting a carefully planned revenge killing.
  • Lenny Scott, 33, was ambushed outside a Skelmersdale gym on 8 February 2024 and shot six times with a 9mm handgun; the weapon has not been found.
  • Prosecutors said Morgan sought revenge after Scott seized a prohibited phone in 2020 that exposed Morgan’s relationship with prison officer Sarah Williams, rejecting a £1,500 bribe and enduring threats.
  • A nine-week trial concluded on 29 August with Morgan convicted of murder, while co-defendant Anthony Cleary was acquitted of murder and manslaughter.
  • Lancashire Police said nine people were arrested during the probe and a number remain under review, with investigators not ruling out further charges.
