Electrical Fire Shuts Metra's University Park Terminal, Alters Metra Electric Service

Inoperable crossing gates may slow train movements during the closure.

Overview

  • The fire began around 1:30 p.m. at the University Park substation and forced the terminal to close for an undetermined period, Metra said.
  • With University Park offline, Metra Electric trains are originating from Matteson or making their final stop at Richton Park.
  • Metra reported no injuries from the incident.
  • The railroad cautioned that train traffic could be slower than usual because some crossing gates are not operating.
  • The disruption follows an operational incident the previous evening that halted Milwaukee District North and West trains near Union Station during rush hour.
