Overview

  • Battery electric registrations in the UK climbed by 40% year-on-year in June, reaching about 47,000 units and a quarter of all new car sales.
  • Preliminary SMMT data show UK BEV sales rose 34.6% to 224,838 units in the first half of 2025, approaching the 28% target set by the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate.
  • Tesla’s performance diverged in June as UK deliveries jumped 12% to 7,891 vehicles with its refreshed Model Y while German registrations fell 60%, and global Q2 deliveries dropped 14%.
  • Chinese automaker BYD posted a 294% sales increase in Germany in June, underscoring the rapid gains of Chinese EV brands across European markets.
  • Fleet orders, aggressive manufacturer discounts and the looming ZEV mandate penalties are driving near-term electric growth, even as private uptake varies.
