Election Commission Sets Nov. 11 Tarn Taran Bypoll as Panthic Groups Back Independent, Forming Five-Way Contest

The contest is widely viewed as an early barometer in a Panthic stronghold before Punjab’s 2027 Assembly race.

Overview

  • Polling will be held on November 11 with counting on November 14, nominations run October 13–21 with scrutiny on October 22 and withdrawals by October 24, and the Model Code of Conduct is now in force after the seat fell vacant with AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal’s death on June 27.
  • The AAP has fielded former SAD leader Harmeet Singh Sandhu, Congress named Karanbir Singh Burj, SAD chose Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, BJP picked Harjit Singh Sandhu, and Panthic groups aligned with Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) announced Mandeep Singh.
  • AAP is again relying on a high-profile defector, with three-time former MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu having joined the party in July after earlier representing Tarn Taran as an Independent and on an SAD ticket.
  • Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) and allied Panthic bodies say they will support Mandeep Singh, brother of jailed accused Sandeep Singh, a move observers say could split traditional Akali-leaning votes.
  • Tarn Taran sits in the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary segment, where Amritpal Singh won in 2024, and the constituency lists about 195,098 registered voters including 1,319 service voters.
