Election Commission Orders FIRs Against Five West Bengal Poll Personnel Over Alleged Voter Roll Manipulation

The directive follows noncompliance with an August order that resulted only in suspensions.

Overview

  • West Bengal’s chief electoral officer and the district election officers for South 24-Parganas and East Midnapore were told to immediately file FIRs and report compliance.
  • The commission cited Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Information Technology Act for the cases.
  • Those named include EROs Debottam Dutta Choudhury (Baruipur East) and Biplab Sarkar (Moyna), AEROs Tathagata Mandal and Sudipta Das, and temporary data-entry operator Surajit Halder.
  • ECI alleges the officials shared ERONet logins and OTPs, enabling unauthorized additions to the rolls, with sample checks and missing BLO verifications flagged by auditors.
  • In a separate step, the WB CEO asked the South 24-Parganas DEO to inquire into Abhishek Banerjee’s claim that several living voters were wrongly listed as deceased in the SIR rolls.
