Election Commission Launches Second Phase to Delist 476 Unrecognised Political Parties

Notably 121 parties in Uttar Pradesh face notices with responses due August 21 ahead of early September hearings.

  • The Election Commission’s second phase has identified 476 registered unrecognised parties for delisting under Section 29A due to inactivity or untraceable addresses since 2019.
  • State Chief Electoral Officers have been directed to serve show-cause notices and oversee written representations and hearings.
  • Uttar Pradesh leads the list with 121 parties receiving notices, followed by Maharashtra (44), Tamil Nadu (42) and Delhi (41).
  • Affected parties in UP must submit their documents by August 21 and may present their case at hearings on September 2 and 3.
  • Parties delisted in the first phase on August 9 have 30 days to appeal to the Election Commission in New Delhi and stand to lose tax exemptions and reserved symbols if appeals fail.
