Overview

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) will electronically integrate death registration data from the Registrar General of India to ensure timely removal of deceased voters from electoral rolls.
  • Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will receive standardized photo identity cards to enhance their recognizability and credibility during voter verification and registration drives.
  • Voter Information Slips (VIS) have been redesigned with larger serial and part numbers to help voters easily identify polling stations and assist officials in locating names.
  • These reforms are authorized under existing electoral and civil registration laws and were finalized during the March 2025 Conference of Chief Electoral Officers.
  • The measures aim to address long-standing issues of 'ghost voters' and improve the integrity and accessibility of India's electoral process ahead of upcoming elections.
