Elaine Stypula Dies During Hardrock 100 Ultramarathon

With cause undetermined, grief counseling is available to runners, crews, volunteers, community members.

Overview

  • Elaine Stypula, a 60-year-old Michigan resident, collapsed at about 9:02 a.m. on the Little Giant Trail three hours into the race and was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m.
  • San Juan County deputies, Silverton Medical Rescue crews and a Flight For Life helicopter team coordinated high-altitude CPR and resuscitation efforts on a remote, rugged segment of the course.
  • The Hardrock 100 covers 102.5 miles through Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, featuring 13 mountain passes and more than 66,000 feet of elevation gain over steep scree, snowfields and river crossings.
  • Authorities have not yet identified the medical cause of Stypula’s collapse pending further review by county officials.
  • Race organizers and local agencies have mobilized counseling and support resources to assist participants, volunteers and community members following the fatality.
