Overview

  • The Nuevas Ideas-led Congress approved 57–3 amendments to five constitutional articles and the changes have been promulgated.
  • Presidential terms are extended from five to six years, term limits are lifted and the two-round runoff requirement is abolished.
  • A transitional clause shortens Nayib Bukele’s current mandate to June 1, 2027 to synchronize presidential, legislative and municipal elections.
  • A Supreme Court packed with Bukele allies and a near-total legislative majority underpinned the swift overhaul of democratic checks.
  • Opposition deputies and rights groups warn that the package will concentrate power in the executive, undermine accountability and foster corruption.
